Since the late 1960s, a concept of ’carnival’ has been increasingly articulated by Anarchists and Marxists as a means of conscious political resistance to the state and capital. This dissertation looks at the texts mainly responsible for this articulation: The writings of the Situationists, primarily Raoul Vaneigem’s "The Revolution of Everyday Life," Bakhtin’s much earlier but influential work "Rabelais and His World" and, most recently, Hakim Bey’s "TAZ: The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy Poetic Terrorism." It also looks briefly at their application in the ’reclaim the streets’ and ’carnivals against capitalism’ actions which have typified many recent protests.
