Music. Folk musicMusic. Classical musicHILL, Joe (1879-1915). Compositeur et interprète de chansonsJoe Hill for Chamber Orchestra, Male Voice, Female Voice and Soloist
In the tradition of Aaron Copland and Charles Ives, renowned Seattle composer Wayne Horvitz reworks contemporary chamber music by incorporating themes from the American folk tradition and songs from the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World).
Inspired by Wallace Stegner’s novel Joe Hill
Text by Flying Karamozov Brothers’ Paul Magid
"Motivated by Hill’s character and lyrics, composer Wayne Horvitz and writer Paul Magid revive the life story and the struggle for workers basic rights led by the Industrial Workers of the World Organization on the west coast at that time. This extraordinary piece incorporates traditional church hymns, folk tunes, thought-provoking text and Joe Hill’s songs in the context of a contemporary approach to the classical chamber orchestra. The culmination of all these musical styles sets the mood of the era, culture and people who contributed to America’s labor." (Sacks & Co. News)
