The Home community on Puget Sound, Washington, promoted sexual liberation; it combined individualism with communal landholding. Thus anarchists became America’s leading advocates of individual freedom, and were challenged by their more conventional neighbors. The article examines tensions endemic to the left in the early 20th century: majority rule vs. minority rights, legal norms vs societal norms, and concludes on Home’s enduring American legacy.
