A READING AND PERFORMANCE

Tuesday, October 21 7:30 PM

Nunemaker Hall, Loyola University

About the presentations: On Monday, Sanders will focus on the events of 1968, while celebrating an entire era of music, art, social experimentation and zeal for change. He will explore such topics as the 1968 uprisings in Paris, Prague and Chicago; rock and roll; underground comic art; the MLK and RFK assassinations; and the Vietnam War. On Tuesday, he will read from his acclaimed new CD and book, Poems for New Orleans, which has been called “this year’s best poetry CD,” and “an urgent masterpiece.” He will also present selections from other poetic and musical works.

About Ed Sanders
: Sanders has been a major figure in American arts and culture since the 60’s, when he began his association with the beat poets and founded the satiric folk/rock group, The Fugs. His book The Family on the Manson gang has sold over a million copies. His major works include the 9-volume America, a History in Verse, the 4-volume Tales of Beatnik Glory, 1968: A History in Verse, The Poetry and Life of Allen Ginsberg, and Chekhov, a biography in verse. His appearance at Loyola will be the first New Orleans presentation of Poems for New Orleans. Offbeat Magazine says that the work “is as heartfelt and ambitious a project as has come out of the storm, and perhaps those of us who have our own stories to tell can learn something from a poet who records, with empathy and sensitivity, the story of a city and a culture." About.com calls it “this year’s best poetry CD,” an “urgent masterpiece” that “contextualizes the whole of this most amazing perfect American city.” The events are sponsored by Loyola’s Biever Guest Lectures Committee and are free and open to the public.
