Czolgosz’ motives have been poorly represented. He was described as a lunatic on the basis of a postmortem pseudo-scientific interpretation of phrenology. He presents a man who is heart-broken, recently radicalized, and thinking he had only months to live. The author sees Cozlgosz as embodying some of the frustrations of the era.
