Throughout the day on SUNDAY, May 22, the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair will host a Film Room, showing both feature and short films related to anarchism or anarchist-supported struggles.
This year’s Film Room includes the Montreal premiere screenings of: “In the Land of the Free” (USA 2010), “Tales from the G20” (Toronto 2011), and “Bastards of Utopia” (Croatian with English subtitles). We will also be showing the feature film “De La Servitude Moderne” (France 2009) as well as short films from Emmanuelle Lippé, Nicolas van Caloen & Juan Pablo Lepore, Andréann Cossette Viau, Micky Morin, Sofi Périard, Hugo Le Bleu-Tadros, Sara Dupéré and others.

- 11am-12pm: De La Servitude Moderne

De la servitude moderne is a book and a 52 minute documentary film which was completely independently produced. The central objective of this film is to update the condition of the modern slavery within the framework of the totalitarian commodity system and to make visible the forms of mystification which conceals this servile condition. This film was made with the sole aim of attacking head-on the dominant system of organizing this world.
– 12pm-1:30pm: In the Land of the Free (MONTREAL PREMIERE)
Vadim Jean / 84 min / ENG / 2010
In the Land of the Free tells the shocking and unbelievable story of Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King, three black men from rural Louisiana who were held in solitary confinement in the biggest prison in the U.S., an 18,000-acre former slave plantation known as Angola. Woodfox and Wallace, founding members of the first prison chapter of the Black Panther Party, worked along with King to speak out against the inhumane treatment and racial segregation in the prison. King was released in 2001 after almost thirty years of solitary confinement. Woodfox and Wallace, convicted in the highly contested stabbing death of white prison guard Brent Miller, remain in Angola where they have spent more than thirty-six years in solitary confinement. This documentary tells the ongoing story of the case of these three extraordinary men.

- 1:30pm-2pm: Dehors

“Monday morning, I feel like running away. The metro is packed, it’s too hot and this world is beating too fast. Life is underlined but underlived. How long can we take it? Dehors takes us out of everyday life and brings up the ultimate question: How can we live differently?”

- 2pm-2:20 pm: IMPA, Usine récupérée, cité culturell

Nicolas van Caloen & Juan Pablo Lepore / 17 min / Argentine / Spanish, subtitled in French / 2009
This short documentary tells the story of the struggle for the first “recovered” factory in Argentina. In 1998, while the managers of IMPA tried to transform the cooperative into a company in order to shut down the business and keep the money, the workers decided the take over their factory and create a self-managed cooperative. This factory is the starting point of the National Movement of Recovered Companies of Argentina. It’s a powerful example of alternative anti-capitalist self-management. Shot in Argentinan in July and September 2009 during a major mobilization. This short documentary is part of the documentary project Semences in which we share the important work of many horizontal and anti-capitalist social movements in the Americas.

- 2:20pm-3pm: Short Films from Télé Sans Frontières

Again this year the Anarchist Bookfair film room will be featuring short films from Télé Sans Frontières, covering diverse subjects and themes from the underground of Montreal.

A short documentary about supervised injection sites, such as Insite in Vancouver, and the urgency of opening one in Quebec.

- 3pm-4pm: Tales from the G20 (MONTREAL PREMIERE)

In June 2010, leaders from the twenty largest economies met in Toronto with representatives of corporate interests to discuss the policies that would shape the world for everyone else. Exclusion zones, overlapping layers of security fencing and an estimated 25,000 police and military personnel transformed the downtown area into an armed camp. Over 1.3 billion dollars were spent on security measures, more than all previous G8/G20 meetings combined. This documentary traces the overt breakdown in civil liberties that occurred during the Summit, from unmarked vans with snatch squads of plainclothes police to the pre-emptive arrest of activists now facing years in prison for organizing demonstrations. Through street level footage, interviews with organizers and city residents, the filmmakers hear stories from the peoples’ side of the fence and explore the Orwellian tactics that increasingly permeate policing in Western democracies.

- 4pm-5pm: Bastards of Utopia (MONTREAL PREMIERE)

Three Croatian activists struggle to change the world. As children, they lived through the violent collapse of Yugoslavia. But now, amid the aftershocks of socialism’s failure, they fight in their own way for a new leftism. In the middle of the struggle, a skeptical American is won over by their cause and even goes to jail with them. The activists, whether clashing with police or squatting in an old factory, risk everything to live their politics. But as the setbacks mount, will they give up the fight? The film, shot during years of fieldwork with a Croatian anarchist collective, applies EnMasseFilm’s unique blend of observation, direct participation and critical reflection to this misunderstood political movement. Its portrayal of activism is both empathetic and unflinching — an engaged, elegant meditation on the struggle to re-imagine leftist politics and the power of a country’s youth.
