Article Abstract from Journal

The article presents an overview of the social histories of anarchism. Particular focus is given to the definition of anarchism and the different periods of its history, including preanarchism, classical anarchism, and postanarchism. According to the author, the anarchists active in the classical period are better defined as libertarian socialists who engaged in a critique of the state. Significant attention is also given to the dissemination and reception of anarchist thought, particularly in the Global South. Details related to the role of labor movements, intellectuals, and subcultures in the spread of anarchism are also presented.
