The article discusses the strategies and organizational structure of U.S. anarchists from 1940-1954 and the influences they had upon anarchism during the 1960s and 1970s, especially the civil rights movement and the New Left. It discusses the perception of anarchy at a low point in the U.S. immediately following World War II, and details the work of anarchist journalists in periodicals such as "Why?" and "Retort." The concept of what the author terms "radical pacifism" among U.S. anarchists is explored and instances of this strategy are discussed. The author attempts to demonstrate that many anarchists from this period mentored organizers of the New Left and Beat Generation in the 1960s.
