Abstract : The purpose of the article is to defend science in general against attacks properly directed towards dominant trends of science in industrial societies. These have undesirable properties (of which the author lists 13), but they are not properties of all science or of the essence of science. There is today more research supporting anarchist and other lifestyles and social structures incompatible with dominant patterns than in any other epoch. Science in general is but an effort at problem solving a little more painstaking, more open to inspection, reportable and testable as to results, than an every day inquiry.
