Abstract (Summary)
Despite lengthy technical passages on composition, Cage’s words inspired practitioners in many disciplines to challenge the certainties of European and American culture. Since its release, it has sold more than half a million copies. Since the reappraisals stemming from Said’s Orientalism, the dialectical nature of Cage’s depiction of "Oriental thinking" and the problematics of his art and thought representing and speaking for Asian cultures have become more obvious.
