Blitzstein (1905-1964), "the father of American opera" started writing it for the Metropolitan Opera in 1959 and Leonard Lehrman began work on it in 1978, completing it in 2001. The first performance of Blitzstein’s magnum opus was a concertante version (the singers holding their scores) with piano, on August 17, 18 and 19, 2001, - thirty-seven years after his death - at the White Barn Theatre in Westport, Conn.
Commissioned originally by The Ford Foundation for The Metropolitan Opera;
completion commissioned in part by The Puffin Foundation; conducted from the piano by Leonard Lehrman .
